Integrating fan-generated content into the media mix at the in-venue experience was the topic of a panel at the Sports Venue Technology Summit at ISE 2017 in Amsterdam. NewTek’s Will Waters, Snell Advanced Media’s (SAM) Tim Felstead, and Avid’s Ben Davison talked about the opportunities such fan engagement offered for sports teams and venues, with RH Consulting’s Roland Hemming moderating.
Virtually every fan arrives with a mobile phone ready to capture images and videos. Some of that content is published to social media, and that’s one way venues can integrate fan content. The team and venue social media pages can be tagged by a fan as he publishes the content, or a hashtag can be used that the team or venue can curate to its own social media pages and media outlets.
Will Waters noted two key aspects to engaging fans with fan-generated content – that the process needs to be easy and quick, and the resulting content needs to get to the fans wherever the fans want to view it. Fans each have their own viewing preferences, whether that is a mobile device of their own, or in-venue fascia, scoreboards or other displays.
